Their mission statement says “The Mayan Store is a Guatemala-based company dedicated to the design and production of exclusive handmade home decor and personal accessories. We are focused on revealing the traditional artisanal techniques of Central America, through innovative careful design.”
Pursuing the question a bit further about the contemporary designs shown, their NY NOW representative said that getting the artisans to change their designs from traditional to contemporary took time and presented challenges.
Throughout the show, we saw the same challenges: traditional techniques and designs, or traditional techniques supporting contemporary designs.
