What markets do you attend?
High Point is our major purchasing market. We like Las Vegas for home accessories. We also attend New York, Atlanta, and Dallas markets and have even purchased at the Canton Market
in China.
Do you have a favorite source for buying rugs?
We purchase directly from the wholesalers, who travel to the Middle and Far East. We’ve also worked with these wholesalers on selections of rug design and colors that would help grow their businesses as well as ours. We do keep catalogs for design inspiration and as an educational tool for our clients about rug design, pattern, scale, and use of color.
What feature in the rug is most important to you?
The most important feature in the rug is that it is handwoven, truly handwoven. We educate our interior design clients and store customers about these rugs and encourage them to perceive each piece as a work of fine art. We explain that there are more man hours invested in making these individual pieces than probably any piece of furniture in their home.
How often do you purchase a custom rug and why?
We purchase custom handmade rugs several times a month. We place them in client homes and offices, as well as feature them in my retail store.
Do you have any favorite style or fiber of area rug?
It changes and evolves, just as consumers’ tastes have. However, I steer clients away from the most recent trends. We are looking for investment quality rugs, and we are looking for rugs that will stand the test of time. All time favorites are the old Persians, and rugs with a beige border and black center field with a myriad of colors and designs woven in. We also love the tone-on-tone geometrics.
Are there any design rules you like to follow or specifically like to break?
When placing several rugs in a home, we recommend that clients appreciate each rug for its individuality as a piece of art, and that adjacent rugs complement each other, not match.
