Where do you source your rugs?

I work with a handful of vendors to source fine antique rugs, older rugs, hand woven new, and/or custom rugs. Developing relationships with vendors based on their under-standing, knowledge and expertise is critical in any aspect of design, but especially critical with fine rugs. I like working with professionals, who can interact as part of a larger design team and who “get” the creative process.

In Denver Shaver-Ramsey, The Rug Source and Synergy Floor-coverings are my favorites and whom I trust completely. Nationally I enjoy working with The Rug Company, Fort Street Studios and Christopher Farr for their beautiful contemporary designs.

Where do you start?

I like to think of rugs as part of the interior architecture. When the envelope is strong, the rest of the design will be strong as well. I have always been inspired by native cultures around the world and their unique expression of adornment of self and living environments.

Do you buy anything by catalog or online?

Typically I do not buy rugs online or from catalogs. I need to know what quality to expect. The one exception has been FLOR. They have a great “Twig” pattern that I have used as a long runner in a kitchen, between the sink and the range work area.

Markets

I don’t go to any markets particularly.  I try to travel to great cities, see great architecture, see great art and spend as much time in the natural world as possible.
